What is an AI readiness assessment? (with a free checklist)
The five pillars of AI readiness and a 15-question checklist you can use today.
Short answer
An AI readiness assessment measures how prepared an organisation is to adopt AI across five pillars (data, technology, people, processes and governance) and produces a scorecard showing what to fix before investing.
Why does AI readiness matter?
Many AI pilots stall not because the AI fails, but because data is scattered, systems cannot connect, staff are unsure how to use the tools, or no one owns the risks. A readiness check finds these blockers early, when they are cheap to fix.
What are the five pillars of AI readiness?
| Pillar | Key question |
|---|---|
| Data | Is our data accurate, accessible and legally usable? |
| Technology | Can our systems connect to AI tools and APIs? |
| People & skills | Do teams know how and when to use AI? |
| Processes | Which workflows are repetitive, high-volume and measurable? |
| Governance | Who approves AI use, and how do we manage risk and privacy? |
AI readiness checklist
- We know our top three business problems AI could help with
- Key data lives in systems we can export from (not only paper)
- We know who owns each important dataset
- Customer data handling follows the Kenya Data Protection Act
- Our core tools (CRM, ERP, accounting) have APIs
- Staff already use AI tools, and we know which ones
- We have a written AI usage policy
- A leader is accountable for AI outcomes
- We can measure time or money saved
- We have budget for a small pilot
If you ticked fewer than five, start with data clean-up and an AI policy. If you ticked seven or more, you are ready for a proof of concept.
Frequently asked questions
How long does an AI readiness assessment take?
Usually one to three weeks, depending on the number of departments and systems reviewed.
Is the free consultation the same as a readiness assessment?
No. The free consultation is a 30-minute call to spot quick wins; a readiness assessment is a deeper review with a written scorecard and action plan.
